The government of Kazakhstan have officially signed the designation document for a new nature reserve within the range of the Betpak-dala saiga population. The new reserve, named ‘Altyn Dala’, is a major success for the Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative and covers almost 500,000 hectares of natural steppe habitat, sandy areas, and wetlands. The region, in the north of the saiga’s range, is especially important during calving.
