Kazakh authorities have carried out the first public burning of 148 saiga horns, five carcasses and 31 saiga skulls seized in Kazakhstan.
This event was initiated by Saiga Conservation Alliance partner, the Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan (ACBK) as a part of its campaign against the illegal saiga horn trade.
The ACBK has been working with both regional, and national authorities for the past several years in order to carry out such an event, and to ensure the destruction of all saiga derivatives after their confiscation. This year, we were pleased that the West Kazakh region took the decision to carry out Kazakhstan’s first public destruction of saiga derivatives.
This public burning of saiga horn and derivative shows the Kazakh government’s strong commitment to fighting the poaching and illegal trade of these beautiful, critically endangered animals.
