Декабрь в Степном

Over the past five years, as a wildlife photographer, I have been fortunate enough to repeatedly visit the territory of the Stepnoi Reserve in the Astrakhan Region and take a series of pictures of amazing animals living here. It happened so that I never got there in December, when the saigas are in a mating period – the most secret and mysterious time in their lives. Finally, this year I managed to plan my time and arrange with the management of the Reserve so that I could fulfill my long-standing dream – to get high-quality artistic pictures of saigas during the mating period on full-frame digital cameras. I should say that it would be practically impossible to carry out such a photo-expedition without serious preliminary preparation and qualified assistance from the employees of the Stepnoi Reserve.
And so, on December 9, a plane from Moscow covered almost 1,500 km and delivered me to Astrakhan, where I was met by an employee of the Reserve Nikolai Tkachev, who brought me directly to the border of the Reserve. Probably a little more than a year has passed since my last visit to this amazing place, but the changes I saw were amazing: in addition to the warm welcome given by the guys, the doors of an absolutely wonderful residential module opened in front of me, where there was everything: light, gas, water, comfortable beds with fresh linen, and most importantly – warm. Although the air temperature was much higher than 0 ° C, the cold wind pierced me to the bones, and in the heat it was possible to quickly warm up. The area around the cordon looked well-designed and simply beautiful. I immediately realized how everything blooms here in the spring. But I almost had neither time nor desire for a long admiration, because right from the doorway of the house I saw in the distance silhouettes of saigas in winter attire, which I had been striving for a long time.
From previous recollections, I knew that a system of special shelters (hiding places) was created on the territory of the Reserve for observing, photographing and filming wild animals when they visit watering places on artesian wells. Such a system enables scientists and guests of the Reserve to conduct observations, and photographers to take pictures of rare animals, eliminating 100% the disturbance factor and not causing them any harm.
Brought me to such a shelter, located about a kilometer from the cordon and built near a small “pond” formed from the spill of an artesian well, the employees of the Reserve left me alone. And then I realized that the whole week allotted for this expedition, I will spend only here. The picture that opened up to me surprised, pleased, and allowed me to conclude that with every new visit to the territory of the Stepnoi Reserve I see more and more saigas here. And above all – adult males! In these December days, when not a single snowflake covered the ground, I was lucky to see more than 350 adult saiga males at the watering hole, whose rut was already declining by this time! Some males were still tired after “hard work”, and some already recovered and behaved quite prudently, proudly, with a sense of accomplishment, carrying their enormous horns, from time to time trying to throw off a ball of dry grass, which another name is called “tumbleweed”. There was no way to tear myself away from the steppe splendor, and I sat in this shelter (skradok) with rare approaches to the cordon, until the moment of departure to the airport. There is no way to calculate how many shots I made, but I coped with the task, and photos of saigas and other wild animals, I am sure, will delight wildlife lovers for a long time, serve as environmental education and the cause of preserving our native nature.
As my personal experience shows, the staff of the Stepnoi Reserve successfully copes with the task of preserving both the saiga and the entire biological diversity of this unique corner of Russian nature. I want to end this short essay with thanks to Vladimir Kalmykov, the director of the Reserve and all Reserve employees for their difficult but important work that they do by putting their soul into it. За последние пять лет мне, как фотографу дикой природы, повезло неоднократно побывать на территории Заказника «Степной» Астраханской области, и сделать ряд снимков удивительных животных, обитающих здесь. Так складывалось, что я ни разу не попадал в «Степной» в декабре, когда у сайгаков проходит гон – самое тайное и загадочное время в их жизни. Наконец, в этом году мне удалось спланировать свое время и договорить с руководством Заказника так, чтобы мне осуществить давнишнюю свою мечту – получить качественные художественные снимки сайгаков в период гона на полнокадровые цифровые камеры. Сразу оговорюсь, что осуществить такую фото-экспедицию без серьезной предварительной подготовки и квалифицированной помощи сотрудников Заказника «Степной» было бы практически невозможно.
И вот, 9 декабря самолет из Москвы, преодолев почти 1500 км, доставил меня в г. Астрахань, где я был встречен сотрудником Заказника Николаем Ткачевым, который и привез меня прямиком на кордон Заказника. Прошло, наверное, чуть больше года с момента моего последнего посещения этого удивительного места, но увиденные мною перемены приятно поразили: кроме радушного приема, оказанного ребятами, передо мной распахнулись двери совершенно замечательного жилого модуля, где было все: свет, газ, вода, удобные кровати со свежим бельем, и главное – тепло. Хотя температура воздуха была значительно выше 0°, холодный ветер пронизывал до костей, и в тепле можно было быстро согреться. Место вокруг кордона выглядело ухоженным и просто красивым. Я сразу представил себе, как все цветет здесь весной. Но на рассуждения и любования у меня почти не было ни времени, ни желания, т.к. прямо от порога домика я видел вдалеке силуэты сайгаков в зимнем наряде, к которым я стремился долгое время.
По прежним воспоминаниям я знал, что на территории Заказника создана система специальных укрытий (скрадков) для наблюдения и фото- и видеосъемки диких животных при посещении ими водопоев на артезианских скважинах. Такая система дает возможность ученым и гостям Заказника вести наблюдения, а фотографам делать снимки редких животных, исключая на 100 % фактор беспокойства и не причиняя им никакого ущерба.
Сопроводив меня в такое укрытие, расположенное примерно в километре от кордона и сооруженное вблизи небольшого «озерца», образовавшегося от разлива артезианской скважины, сотрудники Заказника, оставили меня одного. И тут я понял, что всю неделю, отведенную на эту экспедицию, я проведу только здесь. Открывшаяся мне картина, удивила, порадовала и позволила сделать вывод, что при каждом новом посещении территории Заказника «Степной» я вижу здесь все больше и больше сайгаков. И прежде всего – взрослых самцов! В эти декабрьские дни, когда ни одна снежинка не покрывала землю, мне повезло увидеть на водопое одновременно более 350 взрослых самцов сайгака, у которых к этому времени гон уже шел на спад! Некоторые самцы были все еще утомленными после «тяжелой работы», а некоторые уже оправились и вели себя вполне по-хозяйски, гордо, с чувством выполненного долга неся свои огромные рога, время от времени пытаясь сбросить зацепившийся за них клубок курая – сухой травы, которую еще иначе называют «перекати-поле». Оторваться от степного великолепия не было никакой возможности, и я просидел в этом скрадке с редкими заходами на кордон, до момента отъезда в аэропорт. Нет возможности сосчитать, сколько было сделано мною кадров, но с поставленной задачей я справился, а фотографии сайгаков и других диких животных, я уверен, будут долго радовать любителей дикой природы, служить экологическому просвещению и делу сохранения нашей родной природы.
Как показывает мой личный опыт, коллектив Заказника «Степной» успешно справляется с задачей сохранения как сайгака, так и всего биологического разнообразия этого уникального уголка российской природы. Хочу закончить это небольшое эссе словами благодарности Владимиру Калмыкову – директору Заказника и всем его сотрудникам за их трудную, но такую важную работу, которую они выполняют, вкладывая свою душу.
