On May 5, 2022, Saiga Day was celebrated at secondary schools No. 1 and 4 in Muynak, Karakalpakstan.
The eco-festival was organized within the framework of the project “Resurrection (Vozrozhdenie) Island: Entrepreneurship, Preservation and Development around the Aral Sea” with the support of the Saiga Conservation Alliance and the State Committee for Ecology and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
The main purpose of the event was to show the importance of the saigas role for the steppes, their place in the food chain, and to tell about the long history of this species. Saiga existed very many years ago, huge herds of big-nosed antelope grazed next to mammoths, woolly rhinos. All of them were prey for saber-toothed tigers and other predators of the Ice Age. Ancient animals have long since died out, but saigas have survived to the present day.
More than 190 students and teachers from 5 secondary schools of the city became participants of the eco-festival in Muynak. These are schools No. 1, 3, 4, 5 and a branch of school No. 4 in Mikoyan village. Schools 3, 4 and 5 participated in the Saiga Day for the first time. The holiday was attended by employees of the newly created regional office of the Committee on Ecology and Environmental Protection of Karakalpakstan and representatives of the Saiga Conservation Alliance (SCA).
The festival was held in an interactive format, it was a competition between 4 teams of 10 students each. They had to go through 3 stations:
1. Station “Eco-scholars”. Children answered questions about the problems of survival of the saiga in the steppes now. The positive and negative roles of people in the life of saigas were also analyzed.
2. The second station “Art”. The teams created a thematic poster “Saiga is a bridge between the past and the future.” These posters were placed in the lobby of the 4th school.
3. The third station “The situation in the Reserve.” At this station, employees of the State Committee for Ecology and Nature Protection of Karakalpakstan asked questions to children. They asked questions about situations in the wild, based on their real experience in protected areas.
With great enthusiasm, the children took part in sports competitions, and the interactive games “Saiga on Migration” and “Web of Life” helped to feel the difficulties that saigas face during their migration. All teams showed eco-performances and sketches on the theme of the festival. Colorful concert numbers contributed to the event. It should be noted that at school No. 4 the design was very thorough. From the very entrance to the school to the place where the competitions were held, posters and slogans were placed, helping participants and guests to gradually immerse themselves in the history of the saiga and feel the atmosphere of the holiday.
Noting the importance of this event, Elena Bykova as a member of the SCA team, a researcher at the Institute of Zoology of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, said that “Saiga have played an important role in the well-being of the environment and all its inhabitants in the past. Even today, saigas are very important for the well-being of the steppes and are a very important component of the entire steppe ecosystem, and therefore for the well-being of people living in the steppe.”

День сайгака в в городе Муйнак, Узбекистан: эко-фестиваль «Сайгаки – мост между прошлым и будущим»
5 мая 2022 г. на базе средних школе №№1 и 4 г. Муйнака Каракалпакстана состоялись мероприятия, посвященные международному Дню Сайгака.
Эко-фестиваль был организован в рамках проекта «Остров Возрождение: предпринимательство, сохранение и развитие вокруг Аральского моря» при поддержке Saiga Conservation Alliance и Государственного комитета по экологии и охране окружающей среды Республики Узбекистан.
Основной целью мероприятия было показать важность роли сайгаков для степей, их место в пищевой цепочке, рассказать о длительной истории этого вида. Сайгак существовал очень много лет назад, огромные стада большеносой антилопы паслись рядом с мамонтами, шерстистыми носорогами. Все они были добычей для саблезубых тигров и других хищников Ледникового периода. Древние животные уже давно вымерли, а сайгаки выжили и сохранились до настоящего времени.
Участниками эко-фестиваля в Муйнаке стало более 190 учеников и учителей из 5-ти средних школ города. Это школы №№1, 3, 4, 5 и филиал школы №4 п. Микоян, при этом 3, 4 и 5 школы участвовали в Дне сайгака впервые. Праздник посетили сотрудники недавно созданного районного отделения Комитета по экологии и охране окружающей среды Каракалпакстана и представители Альянса по сохранению сайгака (SCA).
Фестиваль проходил в интерактивном формате. Между собой соревновались 4 команды по 10 учеников в каждой. Для проведения конкурса были организованы 3 станции:
1. Станция «Эко-эрудитов». Дети отвечали на вопросы о проблемах выживания сайгака в степях в современное время. Также были проанализированы положительная и отрицательная роли людей в жизни сайгаков.
2. Вторая станция «Художественная». Команды создали тематический плакат «Сайгак – мост между прошлым и будущим». Данные плакаты были размещены в фойе 4 школы.
3. Третья станция «Ситуация в заповеднике». На данной станции вопросы детям задавали сотрудники Государственного комитета по экологии и охране природы Каракалпакии. Они задавали вопросы о ситуациях в дикой природе, основываясь на своем реальном опыте работы в заповедных территориях.
С большим энтузиазмом ребята приняли участие в спортивных состязаниях, а интерактивные игры «Сайгаки на миграции» и «Паутина жизни» помогли почувствовать и проникнуться трудностями, с которыми сайгаки сталкиваются во время своей миграции. Все команды показали эко- спектакли и сценки по теме фестиваля. Красочные концертные номера украсили мероприятие. Надо отметить, что в школе №4 было очень хорошо и грамотно подготовлено оформление. Уже самого входа в школу до места проведения конкурсов были развешены постеры, слоганы, помогшие участникам и гостям постепенно погрузиться в историю сайгака и почувствовать атмосферу праздника.
Отмечая важность данного мероприятия, Елена Быкова – член команды SCA, научный сотрудник Института зоологии АН РУз. Узбекистан, сказала, что «Сайгаки в прошлом играли важное значение в благополучии окружающей среды и всех её обитателей. Сайгаки и сегодня имеют очень важное значение в благополучии степей и являются очень важной составляющей всей степной экосистемы, а значит и в благополучии людей, проживающих в степи».
