Have you ever wondered where a saiga goes year round? In an area as large as France it’s tricky to keep track of them, so our colleagues at the Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan (ACBK) catch up to 30 of them each year, and in just four minutes, take vital statistics and check the health of each saiga, before putting a radio collar on them and letting a healthy saiga go on its way.
It’s a harmless process which helps us find out more about when and where they migrate to, and what they do when they once they arrive. All this data helps us to conserve this beautiful species through planning protected areas, and ensuring that their ancient migration routes remain available to them.
