Here are several stories from Aikumys Kuandak from Kazakhstan, one of the winners of Young Conservation Leaders 2019. These stories are pieces of her project aimed at raising awareness and understanding about saiga conservation among the local people.

An open lesson “Saiga – the beauty of the steppe” was held for new members of the “Saiga Friends” steppe clubs – pupils in grades 3-4. The purpose of the lesson was to tell children about saigas and their role in the steppe ecosystem.
The children were told about saigas: saiga biology, causes of migration, saiga status and reasons for its protection. They also have seen the cartoon “The Saga of the Saiga”, after which the whole group discussed the actions of the main characters of the cartoon.
The lesson ended with an entertaining game related to determining the role of the saiga and its neighbors in the biocenosis. For this, ropes were used, the ends of which were held by the participants in the game. Each participant was one or another animal, bird or insect of the steppe ecosystem. The game showed the children the connection of all living beings and explained why it is necessary to protect nature, since they are all interconnected.
After the lesson, children shared their impressions. 3rd-grade pupil Zharaspay Balzhan said: “It turns out that every piece of nature has its own role, even the ant. Now I will not crush ants. After all, one way or another, it can affect the saiga. ”
Открытый урок «Сайгак – красота степи»

Открытый урок «Сайгак – красота степи» был проведен для новых участников клубов «Друзья сайги» – учеников 3-4 классов. Цель урока – рассказать детям о сайгаках и их роли в степной экосистеме.
Детям рассказали о сайгаках: биология сайгака, причины миграции, статус сайгака и причины его охраны. Также показали мультфильм «Сага о сайге», после чего вся группа обсуждали поступки главных героев мультфильма.
Урок закончился проведением занимательной игры, связанной с определением роли сайгака и его соседей в биоценозе. Для этого использовали веревки, кончики которых держали участники игры. Каждый участник был тем или иным зверем, птицей либо насекомым степной экосистемы. Игра показала детям связь всех живых существ и объяснила почему нужно охранять природу, так как они все взаимосвязаны между собой. После урока дети поделились своими впечатлениями. Ученица 3-класса Жараспай Балжан: «Оказывается, у каждой частички природы есть своя роль, даже у муравья. Теперь я их не буду давить. Ведь так или иначе он может повлиять на сайгака».
