About us

Who we are

Founded in 2006, the Saiga Conservation Alliance is an international network bringing people and organisations together to protect saigas through collaboration and practical conservation.

Our mission

Restoring the saiga as a flagship species of the steppe

We are committed to restoring the saiga antelope to its position as the flagship species of the Central Asian and pre-Caspian steppes, reflecting the species’ cultural and economic value to local people and its fundamental role in the steppe ecosystem.

We work collaboratively, and freely share our expertise and enthusiasm for saigas. We disseminate our work widely – to those working for saiga conservation, the public throughout the world, governments, and the wider conservation community.

Our approach

Conservation built on strong partnerships

Our approach is rooted in long-term local partnerships and informed by sound science. We bring together knowledge and experience from across the saiga’s range, working with those who understand the species and the challenges facing its conservation.

Many people involved in SCA have worked with saigas for decades. These relationships help us respond to changing needs, support practical action on the ground, and strengthen the skills and resources available to those protecting saigas.

We connect local conservation efforts with research, education, and international cooperation. By sharing knowledge and working across borders, we aim to support solutions that are effective, sustainable, and responsive to the needs of both saigas and the people who live alongside them.

Governance

SCA is a registered charity in England and Wales, governed by a board of trustees and advised by an international Steering Committee with expertise in saiga conservation. Its Constitution sets out how the charity is governed, and is available to read in English or Russian.
