Our work

Protecting Saigas on the Ground

Practical support for the people and places protecting saigas in the wild.

Photo: SCA

From equipping rangers to strengthening protected areas, we provide practical support to the people protecting saigas in the wild. Working with conservation partners, we respond to changing needs on the ground and help strengthen protection across the saiga’s range.

The challenge

Protecting saigas across vast landscapes

Saigas move across enormous areas of steppe, making effective protection challenging. Rangers and protected-area teams must cover remote terrain, often in difficult conditions and with limited resources.

Illegal hunting remains a serious threat in some areas. Elsewhere, conservation teams face changing challenges as saiga populations recover and their interactions with people increase. Sustained, well-equipped protection is essential to respond to these different needs.

Our role

What SCA does

Ranger support

Providing equipment, training, and essential resources to help frontline teams carry out their work.

Protected-area support

Supporting conservation planning, monitoring, and the day-to-day needs of reserves.

Targeted conservation action

Working with partners to respond to emerging challenges and provide support where it is most needed.

Our work in numbers

25 protected areas

where SCA has supported conservation colleagues.

10.7m hectares

covered by those protected areas.

35 sets of winter gear

provided to rangers in Aralkum National Park in 2025.

Looking ahead

Where this could go next

As saiga populations and conservation needs change, the support required on the ground must evolve too. There are opportunities to strengthen ranger capacity, improve monitoring and protected-area management, and develop approaches that respond to the needs of different populations.

By maintaining long-term relationships with conservation partners, SCA can help ensure that practical protection remains effective and responsive in the years ahead.
