Research & Monitoring

Helping build the evidence for saiga conservation.

Context

The challenge

Saigas live across vast landscapes, and their populations can change dramatically. As they recover and the world around them changes, conservationists need reliable evidence to understand how the species is faring, identify emerging challenges, and decide where action is most needed.

Building that evidence takes more than any one study or specialist. Valuable knowledge is held by field teams, researchers, and conservation partners across the saiga’s range. The challenge is to bring their expertise and findings together, build a clearer picture of what is happening, and ensure that conservation decisions are guided by the best available evidence.

Our role

What SCA does

Connecting scientific expertise

We bring researchers and organisations together to investigate complex conservation challenges, from disease outbreaks to emerging threats.

Growing the evidence base

We support student research, connect emerging researchers with local partners, and help share findings that inform saiga conservation.

Supporting field research

We help local researchers and conservation partners carry out fieldwork through funding, equipment, and practical support.

Looking ahead

Building knowledge for the future

As saiga populations recover, new questions are emerging about their health, movements, and interactions with people. Continued research will help conservation partners understand these changes and respond to new challenges.

SCA has opportunities to support more locally led research, connect students and specialists across its network, and help ensure that findings are shared and used in conservation planning. The aim is to strengthen the knowledge and expertise available to protect saigas over the long term.
