Education & Awareness

Helping the next generation connect with saigas

Through Steppe Wildlife Clubs, Saiga Day, and support for local educators, we bring saiga conservation to life for children and communities, creating opportunities to learn, participate, and celebrate the species.

The challenge

Building a lasting connection with saigas

Saigas range across vast landscapes, and many people who live near them may rarely, if ever, see one in the wild. Without opportunities to learn about the species, it can be difficult to understand the challenges saigas face or why their conservation matters.

Building that understanding takes more than a single lesson or event. Children need opportunities to explore, ask questions, and connect what they learn with the wildlife and landscapes around them. Teachers and local partners are essential to making those opportunities part of everyday life.

Our role

What SCA does

Steppe Wildlife Clubs

We support school-based clubs where children learn about saigas and steppe wildlife through lessons, field trips, creative activities, and conservation projects.

Saiga Day

We bring children, families, and communities together to celebrate saigas through local culture, sport, art, and shared activities.

Supporting educators

We provide teachers and club leaders with training, educational materials, and opportunities to exchange ideas, helping them develop and sustain their own activities.

Looking ahead

Building on a growing network

Over nearly two decades, SCA has helped establish a network of Steppe Wildlife Clubs, dedicated teachers, and local partners. The opportunity now is to build on that foundation, supporting clubs to develop their own activities, share ideas, and reach more children.

With Saiga Day now formally recognised in Uzbekistan, there is also scope to strengthen the place of saiga conservation in schools and community life. By investing in local educators and making resources easier to access, SCA can help ensure that learning about saigas continues beyond individual projects and celebrations, becoming something each new generation can take forward.
