Conservation Ecology of the Saiga Antelope - A. Kühl

Student Research Project Research & Monitoring · Working with Communities Kazakhstan · Uzbekistan · Russia 2008 ← Back to archive

Aline Kühl's doctoral research examined the conservation ecology of the saiga antelope across Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Russia. The work combined ecological research with investigation of the social and economic factors linked to poaching, including extensive household research in communities within the saiga range.

The PhD brought ecological and socioeconomic evidence together to improve understanding of the pressures shaping saiga conservation. This interdisciplinary approach helped demonstrate that effective conservation depends on understanding both the animals themselves and the people, livelihoods, and decisions connected to their decline and recovery.
