Mapping Saiga Distribution in Kalmykia - G. Elliott

Student Research Project Research & Monitoring Russia 2011 ← Back to archive

Graham Elliott mapped the spring and winter distribution of saigas in Kalmykia, Russia. The study examined how the population's distribution changed between seasons and helped document the areas used by saigas at different points in the year.

The research added spatial information that could support monitoring and improve understanding of seasonal habitat use. Mapping these patterns is particularly useful for a wide-ranging species whose conservation depends on recognising changes in distribution across large steppe landscapes.
