Monitoring Strategies for Ustyurt Saigas - S. Offord

Student Research Project Research & Monitoring Kazakhstan · Uzbekistan 2011 ← Back to archive

Suzanne Offord evaluated potential monitoring strategies for saiga antelopes on the Ustyurt Plateau, a transboundary landscape spanning Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. The study considered the practical challenges of surveying a sparse, mobile population across a very large and remote area.

The research compared options for improving how Ustyurt saigas could be monitored and helped clarify the strengths and limitations of different approaches. This provided a stronger basis for designing future surveys in a landscape where reliable population information is difficult to obtain.
