Participatory Monitoring of Saigas in Kalmykia - E. Whitebread
Elisabeth Whitebread evaluated the potential for local villagers to take part in monitoring saiga antelopes in Kalmykia, Russia. The research considered whether community participation could help generate useful information about a species that is difficult to survey consistently across a large landscape.
The study helped establish an evidence base for participatory saiga monitoring and explored how local involvement could complement formal conservation research. It contributed to the development of approaches that connect monitoring with the knowledge and participation of people living in saiga range.
