Sustainable Trophy Hunting Model for Betpak-Dala Saigas - Brown

Student Research Project Research & Monitoring · Working with Communities Kazakhstan 2010 ← Back to archive

Brown explored the feasibility of a community-based trophy-hunting model for the Betpak-Dala saiga population in Kazakhstan. The study combined a review of trophy hunting and community-based wildlife management with population modelling to examine whether any form of harvest could be biologically sustainable.

The research tested a controversial conservation idea using ecological modelling and evidence rather than assumption. It helped clarify the biological constraints around potential harvest and placed questions of sustainable use within a wider discussion of community incentives and saiga conservation.
