Using Local Knowledge to Map Saiga Distribution - J. Leon
Jenny Leon evaluated the use of local knowledge in studies of saiga distribution in Kalmykia, Russia. The research examined whether information provided by local people could help identify where saigas occurred and complement more conventional ecological survey methods.
The study added evidence on the usefulness and limitations of local knowledge for mapping a wide-ranging and difficult-to-monitor species. It also demonstrated how community knowledge can contribute to conservation research when it is collected and assessed systematically.
